After three days of work, the IV Synodal Meeting Fratelli Tutti: North-South Socio-Environmental Dialogue concluded in Rome with a concrete proposal: to turn dialogue among sectors and regions into an agenda of shared responsibility, capable of bringing together capacities, resources, and commitments in response to the major social, environmental, and economic challenges facing the world. The initiative brings together representatives of the Church, the world of work, businesses, international organizations, universities, social movements, and organized communities, convinced that common problems cannot be addressed through isolated responses.

The initiative was convened by the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM), the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America (PCAL), with the support of the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI). It placed social dialogue at the center as a tool for building bridges where differences in interests, positions, and responsibilities exist. The proposal does not seek to eliminate conflicts, but rather to create spaces where they can be acknowledged, heard, and transformed into cooperation, in response to the urgency of the current situation.

The sixty participants in the meeting, leaders and representatives from different sectors of organized labor, met with Pope Leo XIV in an audience. The Pope emphasized that differences can become a creative force when guided by shared responsibility and oriented toward the common good.

Pope Leo XIV welcomed the path undertaken and the proposal to develop a North-South Shared Responsibility Agenda for Multisectoral Cooperation. In the face of the challenges posed by a world undergoing profound transformations, he stressed the need to strengthen collaboration among the different sectors of society and warned against a form of progress that could create new forms of exclusion or leave “ruins” in its wake. In this context, responsibility means recognizing that no institution, sector, or region can face today’s challenges alone.

The North-South Shared Responsibility Agenda for Multisectoral Cooperation is structured around six projects reflecting the diversity of the actors involved: artificial intelligence and work; artificial intelligence and care; training and strengthening social dialogue; youth and inclusion; energy transition and the protection of territories; and cooperation with development organizations to promote responses to new technological and social transformations.

The socio-environmental crisis, transformations in the world of work, the advance of artificial intelligence, inequalities, and the situation of vulnerable communities require the participation of those who experience their consequences as well as those who have the capacity to influence them.

The IV Synodal Meeting Fratelli Tutti thus concludes one stage of a process that began four years ago and has been building bridges across the Americas. The challenge now is to sustain those bridges and turn agreements into action. The Shared Responsibility Agenda proposes precisely this next step: for social dialogue to become not merely a space for encounter, but a permanent capacity to build solutions, share responsibilities, and make a common future possible.
